The History Of Sugar From Guyana

The sugar industry of Guyana was founded in 1658 under the rule of the Dutch West Indian Company. The famous and historical sugar estates were established in Demerara, Guyana, hence the name Demerara Sugar.

The sugar estates of Guyana were highly sought after, due to the agricultural rich land, soil and climate of Guyana. Throughout history Portugal, Holland, France, Spain and Britain all engaged in numerous battles for these precious sugar estates.

Our cane sugar derives from these amazing and historical estates and is the finest sugar in the world.

In 1841, the sugar estates were under the full rule of the British. The industry progressed to new highs producing over 12,000 metric tons per year with nearly 400 active plantations. By the mid 1900s Guyana was producing approximately 350,000 tons of cane sugar per year.

Today, Guyana still produces the best cane sugar on the planet, that’s still of the highest quality. The production levels have significantly decreased from its highs of the mid 1900s, but the quality of sugar has enhanced due to modernization of the industry.

We are the only company in Canada that imports this phenomenal natural cane sugar of Guyana.
